Jesus Christ calls us to be a joyful community that celebrates God's love, transforms lives, and is a force for justice in the world.

The Rev. Bart Smith

Bart began his pastorate here in March of 2015 and was drawn to St. Mark’s because of its strong commitment to following Jesus by pursuing the common good. Previously he served Raleigh Court and Green Ridge Presbyterian Churches in Roanoke, VA as a temporary pastor. Bart received his Master of Divinity (the greatest degree title ever) from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, TX, where he was active in immigration justice work and the youth ministry of University Presbyterian Church. His undergraduate studies were at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA where, as a criminology major, he apprenticed the chaplain of the local jail.

Bart is married to the Rev. Elizabeth Toland Smith, who is parish associate of the Holy Way Presbyterian Church and the Volunteer Coordinator for the Casa Mariposa Detention Visitation ProgramTogether they enjoy hiking, traveling, going to movies, exploring Baja Arizona, and spending time with their hound-mix dog, Gumby.

Bart’s ministry is guided by Ephesians 3:20: “Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine…”
